Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round platter or serving board (12–14 inches)
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes (halved or whole)
  • 1 cup broccoli florets (small to medium)
  • 1 cup cauliflower florets (small to medium)
  • 1 cup snap peas or snow peas (trimmed)
  • 1 cup carrot sticks (2–3 inches long, thin strips)
  • 1 cup cucumber slices (rounds or half-moons)
  • 1/2 cup black olives (whole)
  • 1/4 cup red bell pepper strips (thin)
  • 1/4 cup yellow bell pepper strips (thin)
  • 1 cup sour cream (full-fat or Greek yogurt)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (optional)
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk (to thin dip)
  • 4–6 whole black olives (for spider bodies)
  • Pretzel sticks or chive pieces (for spider legs, 8 per spider)
  • Small bowl or ramekin (about 4 inches wide)

Instructions

  1. Make the ranch dip: In a small mixing bowl, combine 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon dried parsley, 1 teaspoon dried dill, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Whisk until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice if using, then stir in 1-2 tablespoons milk until the dip reaches your preferred consistency. Taste and adjust seasoning. Cover and refrigerate while you prepare the vegetables.
  2. Prep the vegetables: Wash all vegetables thoroughly. Cut the broccoli and cauliflower into small, bite-sized florets. Slice the cucumber into rounds about 1/4-inch thick. Cut the carrot sticks into thin strips about 2-3 inches long. Halve the cherry tomatoes if they’re large. Slice the bell peppers into thin stripsโ€”about 1/4-inch wide and 2-3 inches long. Trim the snap peas if needed. Pat everything dry with paper towels.
  3. Arrange the outer ring: Place your small bowl or ramekin in the center of the round platter. Arrange the cherry tomatoes, broccoli florets, cauliflower florets, and snap peas in a ring around the bowl, about 2 inches from the edge of the platter. Mix the colors and shapes for visual interest.
  4. Create the spider web lines: Take the bell pepper strips (red and yellow) and arrange them like spokes of a wheel, radiating outward from the center bowl to the edge of the platter. Space them evenlyโ€”about 8-12 spokes total. Then, working from the center outward, use additional bell pepper strips to create curved lines connecting the spokes. You should end up with 3-4 concentric rings of curved lines.
  5. Fill in the remaining vegetables: Arrange the cucumber slices and carrot sticks in the spaces between the web lines. Place the black olives strategically around the web, tucking a few into the outer rings for visual interest.
  6. Make the spiders: For each spider, take a whole black olive (this is the body). Cut 8 thin strips from a pretzel stick or chiveโ€”these are the legs. Gently press 4 legs into each side of the olive, angling them slightly forward to look like a walking spider. Place 2-3 spiders on the web, positioning them near the center or crawling along the web lines.
  7. Fill the center bowl: Spoon the prepared ranch dip into the small bowl in the center of the platter. Smooth the top with the back of a spoon. For an extra spooky touch, place a whole black olive on top of the dip to look like a trapped fly.
  8. Final touches: Step back and look at your creation. Adjust any vegetables that seem out of place. Add a few extra olives or pepper strips if there are bare spots.

Notes

Make the dip ahead of time for best flavor. Pat vegetables dry to prevent sliding. Use a damp paper towel under the center bowl to keep it in place. Don’t overfill the platterโ€”the web design needs space. Spiders don’t need perfectly symmetrical legs; slightly uneven angles look more natural. Keep the tray cold until serving.
