A quick and easy Halloween sangria made with blood oranges, red wine, and warm spices. This naturally spooky drink comes together in just 15 minutes and is perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle dry red wine (750 ml), such as Tempranillo or Merlot
  • 1/2 cup fresh blood orange juice (from about 3–4 blood oranges)
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise (optional)
  • 3 blood oranges, sliced into rounds or wedges
  • 1 apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1/2 cup frozen blackberries or raspberries
  • Ice cubes (optional)
  • Sparkling water or ginger ale (for topping off)
  • Fresh mint sprigs (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep your fruit first. Slice 2 of the blood oranges into thin rounds. Cut the third one in half and juice it to get about 1/2 cup of juice. Slice your apple thin, and measure out your pomegranate seeds and berries. Set aside a few nice orange slices and mint sprigs for garnish later.
  2. Combine the liquids. In your large pitcher, pour in the entire bottle of red wine. Add the fresh blood orange juice, brandy (if using), and honey. Whisk or stir until the honey dissolves completely, about 30 seconds.
  3. Add the spices. Drop in the cinnamon stick and star anise. Let them float around to infuse the sangria as it sits.
  4. Layer in the fruit. Add the sliced blood oranges, apple slices, pomegranate seeds, and frozen berries. Use a wooden spoon to gently press down on the fruit to release some juices without mashing it.
  5. Chill for at least 1 hour, or up to 4 hours or overnight for best flavor.
  6. When ready to serve, fill each glass about 3/4 full with the sangria mixture. Top off with a splash of ginger ale or sparkling water.
  7. Garnish with fruit from the pitcher, a fresh mint sprig, and a whole blackberry. Serve immediately.

Notes

Blood oranges are seasonal (December to April). If unavailable, substitute regular orange juice with a splash of cranberry juice for color. For best flavor, make the base a day in advance and add fizzy water and berries just before serving. Avoid using expensive wine; a $10 bottle of Spanish red works perfectly. Remove the cinnamon stick after a few hours to avoid someone biting into it.
