A warm, comforting cocktail made with apple cider, caramel, butter, and a hint of spice, finished with a cinnamon-sugar rim for a cozy winter experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups apple cider (fresh or high-quality bottled)
  • 2 ounces dark rum or bourbon (per serving)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons caramel sauce (per mug)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (per mug)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (for rim)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for rim)
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix one tablespoon of sugar with half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon on a small plate.
  2. Moisten the rim of your mug with a little water or cider, then dip into the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.
  3. Pour 2 cups of apple cider into a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  4. Heat the cider until steaming hot (around 160°F), stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Do not let it boil.
  5. Add the butter and caramel sauce to the hot cider, stirring continuously until melted and combined.
  6. Drop a cinnamon stick into the prepared mug.
  7. Pour the hot cider mixture into the mug over the cinnamon stick and let steep for about one minute.
  8. Stir in the rum or bourbon.
  9. Garnish with a fresh apple slice if desired and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not boil the cider as it ruins the fresh apple flavor. Use room temperature butter for easier melting. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the spirit and add vanilla extract. Store cider base in the fridge for up to 3 days without alcohol.
