A warm, spiced Halloween punch made with cranberry juice, apple cider, and frozen berries, simmered with cinnamon and star anise for a cozy, magical drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (960 ml) cranberry juice
  • 4 cups (960 ml) apple cider
  • 2 cups (280 g) frozen mixed berries
  • 1 cup (240 ml) orange juice
  • 3–4 tablespoons (45–60 ml) honey or maple syrup
  • 2 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 3 whole star anise pods
  • 1 teaspoon (2 g) whole cloves
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
  • Optional garnishes: apple slices, orange wheels, fresh cranberries, cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine cranberry juice, apple cider, and orange juice. Stir.
  2. Add frozen mixed berries (do not thaw).
  3. Drizzle in honey or maple syrup (start with 3 tablespoons).
  4. Add cinnamon sticks, star anise, whole cloves, and sliced ginger. Stir gently.
  5. Place pot over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer (small bubbles, not a rolling boil). This takes about 8-10 minutes.
  6. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-12 minutes, until berries break down and punch turns deep purple.
  7. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice (remove star anise or cloves if too strong).
  8. Strain punch through a fine-mesh strainer into a large bowl or pot, pressing on berries to extract juice. Discard solids.
  9. Ladle warm punch into heatproof mugs. Garnish as desired.

Notes

Do not boil the punch; a gentle simmer is key. Remove star anise after 8-10 minutes to avoid overpowering licorice flavor. Can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 5 days. For a cold version, combine ingredients and refrigerate for 2 hours, then strain and serve over ice.
