Moist, tender pumpkin scones made from scratch with a creamy brown sugar glaze. This easy fall recipe bridges the gap between convenience and homemade flavor, perfect for beginners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (120g) 100% pure pumpkin puree
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup (50g) packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1½ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ounces (55g) cream cheese, softened (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened (for glaze)
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar, sifted (for glaze)
  • 12 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and pumpkin pie spice.
  3. Add cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients and work it in using a pastry blender, forks, or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter pieces.
  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the egg, vanilla, and pumpkin puree.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and stir gently until the dough just comes together; do not overmix.
  6. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently press into a 1-inch thick disc.
  7. Cut the disc into 8 equal wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving 2 inches between each.
  8. Bake for 15-18 minutes until tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Let scones cool on the pan for 5 minutes.
  10. While scones cool, beat softened cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  11. Gradually add powdered sugar to the cream cheese mixture, then add milk one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.
  12. Drizzle the glaze over the slightly cooled scones and let it set before serving.

Notes

Ensure butter is cold for flaky texture. Do not overmix the dough to avoid tough scones. Rotate the pan halfway through baking for even browning. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 GF blend and add an extra tablespoon of flour. For dairy-free, swap butter and cream cheese for vegan alternatives.
