  • 1 large egg yolk, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ยฝ cups (315g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • ยฝ teaspoon baking powder
  • ยฝ teaspoon salt
  • ยฝ cup (60g) black sesame seeds, toasted
  • 1 cup (170g) dark chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bar

Instructions

  1. Toast black sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium-low heat for 3-5 minutes until fragrant and slightly darker. Let cool completely.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (3-4 minutes).
  3. Add egg yolk and vanilla extract, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, mixing on low until a dough forms. Fold in cooled black sesame seeds.
  6. Cover dough and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (up to 2 days).
  7. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Divide dough into two portions. Pipe small balls for the spider bodies onto the baking sheets.
  9. Using the remaining dough, pipe eight thin legs extending outward from each body.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Melt dark chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring between each.
  12. Transfer melted chocolate to a piping bag and pipe legs onto the cooled cookies. Allow to set.

Notes

Chilling the dough is critical to prevent spreading and ensure sharp details. If dough is too sticky, chill longer or add a tablespoon of flour. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend. For vegan, use vegan butter and egg replacer. Store in an airtight container for up to one week.
