These Chocolate Spider Web Cupcakes are a quick and easy Halloween treat made with a boxed cake mix and canned frosting. With a simple spider web design using a zip-top bag and toothpick, they’re perfect for last-minute class parties or spooky movie nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker recommended)
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (or melted coconut oil)
  • 1 cup water (or strong brewed coffee for deeper flavor)
  • 1 can (16 ounces) chocolate frosting (store-bought)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (if making homemade frosting)
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Hershey’s or Ghirardelli recommended)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk, as needed
  • 1/2 cup white frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1–2 tablespoons powdered sugar (to thicken white frosting, if needed)
  • Black licorice strings or black gel frosting (for spiders, optional)
  • Small candy eyes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Line your muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, eggs, oil, and water. Mix according to package directions (about 2 minutes with an electric mixer on medium speed) until smooth and slightly thick.
  3. Fill each cupcake liner about 2/3 full using a cookie scoop or large spoon. You should get about 18-20 cupcakes.
  4. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. While cupcakes cool, prepare the chocolate frosting. If using store-bought, stir to loosen. For homemade, beat softened butter until creamy, add cocoa powder and vanilla, then gradually beat in powdered sugar and milk until smooth and spreadable.
  6. Once cupcakes are completely cool, spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting on each one, smoothing the surface as much as possible.
  7. Spoon white frosting into a small zip-top bag. If too runny, add 1 tablespoon powdered sugar and mix. Snip off a tiny corner of the bag.
  8. Starting from the center of each cupcake, pipe a spiral of white frosting outward. While still wet, use a toothpick to drag lines from the center outward (like spokes on a wheel), then drag lines from the outer edge inward between each spoke to create the web pattern.
  9. Optional: Add spiders using black licorice strings for legs and candy eyes, or draw spiders with black gel frosting.
  10. Let decorated cupcakes sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes to allow frosting to firm up slightly before serving or transporting.

Notes

Don’t rush the cooling processโ€”warm cupcakes will melt the frosting. Practice the web pattern on a plate first. Keep white frosting thick (toothpaste consistency) to prevent bleeding. Use a light hand with the toothpick for clean lines. Work in batches of 3-4 cupcakes at a time as the white frosting sets quickly.
