These homemade sunbutter and jelly uncrustables are the perfect nut-free lunch solution for kids. Quick to make, freezer-friendly, and absolutely delicious, they solve the problem of picky eaters and allergy-safe school lunches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices soft white bread or whole wheat sandwich bread
  • 1/4 cup sunbutter (sunflower seed butter), smooth and creamy
  • 1/4 cup jelly or jam (grape or strawberry recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened (optional, for toasting)
  • Optional: pinch of cinnamon, drizzle of honey, or chia seeds

Instructions

  1. Flatten the bread: Gently roll each slice of bread with a rolling pin until slightly thinner but not paper-thin.
  2. Spread the sunbutter: On 4 slices of bread, spread about 1 tablespoon of sunbutter, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges.
  3. Add the jelly: On the other 4 slices, spread about 1 tablespoon of jelly, keeping it away from the edges.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches: Place the sunbutter slices on top of the jelly slices, sunbutter side down. Press gently to stick together.
  5. Cut with the mold: Center the uncrustables mold over the sandwich and press down firmly to cut through the bread and seal the edges.
  6. Crimp the edges (optional): If needed, use a fork to press around the edge of the round sandwich for a decorative seal.
  7. Toast or serve: For a warm version, melt butter in a skillet and toast the uncrustable for 1-2 minutes per side until golden. For cold lunch boxes, serve straight from the fridge or freezer.

Notes

Do not skip flattening the bread—it helps the edges seal better. Chill the bread in the freezer for 5 minutes before assembling for cleaner cuts. Use room temperature sunbutter for easier spreading. Make in batches and freeze for up to 3 months. If jelly is too runny, stir in a teaspoon of chia seeds to thicken.
